Islandhopping in Greece

Onkel Tom in Rhodos

 Rhodos: 13.09.-16.09. und 01.10.

 Chalki: 16.09.-18.09.

 Kalymnos, Pserimos, Kos: 18.09.-22.09.

 Nissiros: 22.09.-27.09.

 Tilos: 27.09.-01.10.

Rhodes - Grand old Lady of the Dodekanes

The pictures you see here were taken in the old town of Rhodes. To see the whole island you might need three days. A must are the old town of Rhodes, the monistry Skiadi and the castles Monolithos and Kritina. You should also take a ride through the cool pine-woods inside the island. To famous, but crowdy Lindos you should go in the earlier morning. Rhodes is recommendable because you also find some peaceful places (not Faliraki beach!).

Chalki - Little pearl, unknown treasure

You can reach Chalki from the small port Kamirou Skala on Rhodes. I especially liked the nice sandy beach, the friendly people and the enourmous peace. When you sit at the small harbour, the loudest sound you hear is the fridge of the mini-market.
If you are in a physically good shape you can hike to the Monistry of St. John... I had to return.

The beach is very nice, the inhabitants of course too - and the silence is awesome... and at "Maria's" at the port you may get the best Moussaka in the hole Greece
...and of course kisses and hugs to Penny from London.

Kalymnos, Pserimos, Kos - Sorry, but...

On Sept. 18 i landed with the "MS Patmos" on the island of Kalymnos. I only stayed for one night. My impression was that this is a very loud and hectic place, especially although the island doesn't have an international airport. From Sept. 19 to 20 I stayed on the mini-isle of Pserimos. During the day the island is crowded by day-trippers from Kos. Therefore the silence in the evening-hours is very special. These two days have been an extraordinary experience.

From Sept. 20 to 22 I took a look over Kos. Maybe there are some beautiful places too, but the capitol of Kos is a very hectic, loud and expensive place. There are not many things that show the real Greece. Sorry, but I don't think that I will ever return to one of these three islands.

Nissiros - Refuge at the Vulcano

On Sept. 22 I escaped from Kos to Nissiros. The island is a place of peace and silence. The only disatvantage is, that the main-village Mandraki, where the whole life is going on, doesn't own a real beach. For a round-trip into the vulcano-crater and to the villages Nikia and Emborio up in the hills you might need half a day. Also in half a day you get to know Mandraki easily. There you must eat at Irini's tavern on the Plaka Ilikiomeni - wonderful atmosphere and a fantastic Greek cooking. I stayed until Sept. 27 and took part at the church-feast for St. John Theologos, which was a fantastic experience.

Many Greetings to Allison and her boyfriend from Leeds. I enjoyed the time with you!

Tilos - Somewhen i will stay there forever

From Sept. 27 to Oct. 01 I stayed on Tilos and after some doubts in the beginning I soon fell in love with this island. A place to drop out and stay there. The most important places of the isle are visited in half a day. To experience the atmosphere of the island you have to stay at least two or three days... I didn't want to leave. If you seek the silence than you are happy that this island is far enough from Kos or Rhodes that the peace is not disturbed by day-trippers.
And again greetings: This time to Panagiotis. I sure will visit you again, old friend!
...and a "Skal!!" to Henri, I will try to stay a 'hippie'!
